Alessi: chefs, designers and cultural historians go together

History is written in 1921. Giovanni Alessi Anghini starts up a small metalworking company in Omegna, Italy. Three years later Alessi produces his own creations. Seven years after its founding, the company moves to Crusinallo, which is still home to this Italian design label.
In 1935, the son, Carlo Alessi, started designing most of the products from that period. His first world-famous design was the Bombé line: coffee and teapot, sugar bowl, milk jug and tray. It is the start of a long series of icons in the world of kitchenware. Over the years, chefs, designers and cultural historians have worked together to achieve beautiful results.

Alessi design is world famous

In 1970, under the management of grandson Alberto, it was decided to open up craft design to mass production. In this way, Alessi conquers the world and becomes accessible to everyone. These are just a few of the designers of an almost 100-year-old Alessi history: Wiel Arets, Achille Castiglioni, Michael Graves, Zaha Hadid, Toyo Ito, Tom Kovac, Greg Lynn, Alessandro Mendini, Jean Nouvel, Ettore Sottsass, Richard Sapper and Philippe Starck. Maybe you don't recognize so many names in this list? Some of these designers are mainly architects. They go beyond their book to create something completely different: kitchen and tableware. You will probably know their best-known designs. Think for example of Starck's fruit press 'Juicy Salif' in the shape of a kind of octopus. Or think of the corkscrew 'Anna G.' by Alessandro Mendini. Also the oil, vinegar, pepper and salt set '5070' by Ettore Sottsass you have probably already seen in some restaurant. In other words: Alessi design is affordable and pure design at the same time.
