Vitra: a relationship of trust between designers and customers
This label was founded as a family business in 1950 and is located in Birsfelden, near Basel in Switzerland. From the moment this company was founded, the family had a very specific goal: the cooperation between market knowledge, production know-how and artistic freedom. Since its foundation, they have worked closely with the world's top designers and architects. Some names such as Charles & Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen, Frank Gehry and George Nelson are just a small selection from the range of designers Vitra works with.
The Eames chair: Vitra knows the value!
De Eames Plastic Chair is een icoon onder de stoelen. Hij dateert officieel uit 1950, maar aan deze stoel ging heel wat zoekwerk vooraf. De drijfveer voor het ontwerpen van deze stoel is 'een zo groot mogelijk publiek zo veel mogelijk laten genieten van het allerbeste, en dit voor zo weinig mogelijk geld'. In die tijd was dit een groot ideaal, maar ze zijn erin geslaagd. De Eames stoel werd ontworpen op basis van de vormen van het menselijk lichaam. Het werd een soort van zitschaal op stevige maar toch elegante poten. Eerst werd de schaal in aluminium en multiplex vervaardigd. Maar dit gaf een onbevredigendd resultaat. Op een gegeven moment ontdekten de designers de glasvezel. Dit werd het uiteindelijke concept. In 1948 organiseerde het Museum of Modern Art de wedstrijd 'Low Cost Furniture'. Er werden twee versies van de Eames stoel voorgesteld: de Plastic Armchair met A-schaal en de Plastic Side Chair met S-schaal. In 1950 werden beide stoelen op industrieel niveau geproduceerd. Vitra ondersteunt zowel de historische en artistieke waarde als de kwalitatief hoogstaande uitvoering van het design.
Vitra moves with the times
In 2016 Vitra adapted the historic designs of the Eames chair. For example, the base of a series of chairs was raised by 20mm. And different materials are now being used for the seat shell than 80 years ago. Every change is made in consultation with the Eames family so that the historic character of this beautiful piece of furniture is fully preserved. You have a choice between different versions of the seat shell and various types of bases, and you can combine them as you see fit.
