If we had to sum up Knoll in a few words, this would be it: Constellation, harmony, modernity, design, work/life, sustainability and future. These 7 concepts have been intensely interwoven since the foundation in 1938, each time in a different way, each time with a different result. Knoll places his creations in people's environment, takes the creation of order into account and thinks about how the environment influences the person. Workplaces and home furnishings have an unmistakable influence on man and his functioning. In the 75 years of Knoll's existence, this philosophy has time and again been tested against reality and time and again applied and adapted where necessary. As a result, over the years Knoll has released beautiful pieces of furniture, pieces that are valued and admired over and over again.
Knoll attracts top designers: with brilliant results
Eén van de grootste voorbeelden van topvakmanschap is de Knoll Barcelona stoel, een ontwerp van Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Deze stoel werd ontworpen voor het Duitse paviljoen op de wereldtentoonstelling in Barcelona in 1929. Had men toen al het vermoeden dat dit een wereldvermaarde stoel ging worden? Het ontwerp was gebaseerd op een klassieke vouwstoel en hij werd uitgebracht met bijhorende voetbank. 'Less is more' zat in het achterhoofd van de ontwerper toen hij dit meubel creëerde. Destijds ontworpen in wit geitenleer, is deze stoel nu te verkrijgen in diverse uitvoeringen. Niet minder dan Eero Saarinen is dan weer verantwoordelijk voor de alom bekende Tulip Chair, ontworpen in 1955-1956. In die tijd werd deze prachtige stoel beschouwd als 'space age'. Hierop had Saarinen als uitleg dat hij de wirwar van poten van klassieke tafels en stoelen tot één orde wou terugvoeren. De Tulip Chair doet dit uiteraard helemaal. Ook bijvoorbeeld zijn tafel Pedestal kadert volledig in deze filosofie. Naast deze twee topdesigners, Saarinen en van der Rohe, trekt Knoll constant nieuw designersbloed aan. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan David Rockwell met zijn ervaring in het hotel- en restaurantwezen, David Adjaye met zijn combinaties tussen ingenieus materiaalgebruik en hedendaagse kunstvormen en Harry Bertoia met zijn achtergrond als metaalbewerker en sierradenontwerper. Deze en nog talloze andere designers vormen de basis van de steeds weerkerende topprestaties.
Home and work go hand in hand, more and more
Hoe de oprichter Hans Knoll het in 1938 al kon weten, is velen een raadsel. Maar tegenwoordig is zijn visie bevestigd: werken en wonen vloeien meer en meer over in elkaar. Een kantoorruimte in uw woning, een rustruimte in uw kantoorgebouw, een comfortabele zitbank in de ontvangstruimte van uw onderneming, een stoel aan de ene kant van uw eettafel en een bureaustoel aan de ander kant van dezelfde tafel zijn geen rariteiten meer. Uw werk- en woonomgeving groeit alsmaar nader tot elkaar. Dit weerspiegelt zich in de ontwerpen waar Knoll mee op de markt komt. Kantoormeubelen en meubelen voor thuis worden met precies hetzelfde vakmanschap ontwikkeld en uitgevoerd.
Knoll does not settle for mediocrity
At Knoll it's all or nothing. There is no middle ground. And of course they always go for the top. Quality comes first, finishing is a must and style and comfort complete the whole. In the past we saw the collaboration with Bauhaus and Arts & Crafts. In 2011 Knoll won the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award for corporate and institutional performance. Whoever wins this award is appreciated and honoured for the impact of their work on the general public. It puts Knoll on the world timeline, both past and future.
