Carl Hansen and hans J. wEgner inseparable

Whoever says Carl Hansen, says Hans J. Wegner. The designer Hans J. Wegner is responsible for the top selling products at Carl Hansen. He is considered one of the leading figures in 20th century furniture design.

Carl Hansen: simplicity, craftsmanship, beauty and durability

In 1908, Carl Hansen founded a bedroom workshop on the Danish island of Funen, which shortly afterwards developed into a real furniture workshop. In 1934, in the midst of the economic crisis, the son Holger took over the business. Thanks to a collaboration with the American company Singer, Carl Hansen got through the difficult times. After the Second World War, Hansen appealed to young designers and they focused their exports mainly on America. In the 1970-80s, when business declined somewhat, Hansen continued to invest in new machines. So many years later, in 2014, Hansen conquered the Japanese market and opened a flagship store in Tokyo and again in Osaka in 2018. Carl Hansen is and remains best known for his special chairs.

Carl Hansen chairs: passionate craftsmanship

'Tijdloze schoonheid, comfort, vakmanschap en duurzaamheid zijn, zodanig geworteld in onze meubelmakerij, dat enkel het zicht en het aanraken van de meubels nodig is om ze te begrijpen en er verliefd op te worden,' aldus CEO Knud Erik Hansen. De stoelen van Carl Hansen zijn hiervan het beste voorbeeld. De designer Hans H. Wegner was de belangrijkste ontwerper van een hele reeks Carl Hansen stoelen. Een paar voorbeelden van deze prachtige zitmeubelen zijn:

CH20 Elbow Chair

This chair was designed in 1956. Unfortunately this design was put aside and was only taken into production in 2005. That same year this chair won the ICFF Editors Award in New York. The backrest that extends to the elbows is made of one piece of curved wood. The construction on which the seat rests is very solid. However, this chair has an elegant and light appearance.

CH33

The CH33 from 1957 became a leading piece of furniture in the next few years. In 2012 this chair was re-released and this time it was also available in colours. Round organic shapes and tapered legs make the chair simple but strong. Two versions were chosen: the CH33T with a wooden seat and the CH33P with a seat upholstered in fabric or leather.

CH36

The design of this chair from 1962 is tighter than the models above, but also testifies to elegance and craftsmanship. The legs are tapered downwards. With the rear legs, this design is taken over in the backrest, so that this becomes one sleek whole. The special feature of this chair is the hand-woven seat in paper cord. There is also a model with armrests available: the CH37.

CH25 lounge chair

These are not the only chairs in the Hansen collection. You will find other models as well as lounge chairs such as the CH25, designed in 1949 and taken into production in 1950. The designer chose the same material as the CH36, namely paper cord. The model is so popular that it has been in continuous production since 1950.
