Model 70 Womb Chair by Knoll - discussed

Model 70 Womb Chair - Designed in 1946, produced 1948 - today

After the end of World War II, new materials and technologies - developed for use during the war - became available to the public.

One of those new developments was fibre-reinforced polyester, commonly known as plastic. Eero Saarinen liked to use this new material because it allowed shapes that were not possible with wood. He therefore designed seating furniture for Knoll that was made in this material. The shell of the Womb Chair is made of one piece of plastic. Initially they were produced by a boat builder from New Jersey. The Womb Chair by Knoll was the first mass-produced plastic design chair. The Womb Chair quickly gained the status of a popular modernist design icon, embracing the imagination of a new generation.
